Also known as “the city of 40 churches”, Nessebar is among the oldest cities in Europe, with more than 3200 years of history. Nessebar was founded by the ancient Greeks in the 5th century BC in the place of an already existing Thracian village. Nessebar reached its cultural zenith in the 14th century AD when most of the churches were built on the peninsula. In the 20th century Nessebar began to flourish again, establishing itself as a museum and touristic center. In 1983 Nessebar became a part of the UNESCO world heritage.
Nessebar is one of the most attractive resorts on the Black Sea. Among the sights worth seeing are the fortresses, as well as the churches Christ Pantocrator, St. John, The Old Bishopry, St. Steven. Nessebar is also famous for its beautiful beaches covered in thin golden sand and visitors can enjoy a walk on the beach alley surrounding the peninsula.
Nessebar is divided into two main districts: Old Town and New Town. The closest airports to Nessebar are in Burgas (30 km away) and Varna (100 km away).
